An IRC Story
It's been almost 2 months since I made the big move. The move I'm referring to
is the one I made on August 04, 1998. But it all started over a year ago when I
met a very interesting man via my computer and the internet. I was then going
to find out just how hard a long distance relationship could be. We talked many
times over the next year and wondered how different our feelings would be for each
other if we would ever meet in real life. Then the long awaited day had arrived. We
met in person when he came to visit me in Oklahoma on November, 1997. That was
the most exciting and special event of my life. Seeing him walking to me from the
airport terminal, the long hug that followed, and then the drive back home. I knew
when I saw him that I loved him very much. And thankfully the feeling was mutual!
He only stayed with me for two very short weeks. Then I visited him in Holland a
few weeks later during the Christmas & New Year holiday. We then had to wait 4
long months before we could be together again for the entire month of May. We
knew then that one of us would have to move to the home country of the other for
us to be happy. We made the decision for me to move there. So then I sold most
everything I owned, packed two bags, packed my cat "Lucy", and hopped on a big
Holland bound plane.
So that is my story in short. Of course it was a little more complex than that.... as life
most often is. And things are still difficult sometimes. Even now I face learning a new
and difficult language, getting my permit to stay and work in Holland, and generally
learning how to live here. But I have to say that I like dutch people and it's culture. I
am enjoying what I consider to be the best time of my life. I'm with the man I love
and he is so very wonderful. And I want to express my sincere gratitude to his family
for giving us their full support. That means a lot to this Okie.
So the moral of this story is (and there has to be one) don't fear the hard decisions.
And don't push away the opportunities and chances life hands to you.
Life is to be lived. Be happy.
